Toxic Squid - from a pencil drawing [link]

By CristynWench :iconcristynwench:

Thank you Cristyn for letting me play with your squid :D
I hope you like it.

This has taken me hours and hours to do as I am still learning how to use GIMP.
I am rather depressed at the moment so any comments will be highly appreciated - no comment = no happiness :(

Very nice job. Particularly in the shading. Lots detail.

Thanks! :boogie: Not my drawing, though I did redraw the leg as it was anatomically wrong. I am still learning to use GIMP - complicated or what?

I gave up on gimp after 2 1/2 minutes. I use paint.net though I don't think it does everything Gimp does. Much easier to use for what I need.

It is easy! Flat color on one layer, then add shade and shadows in dark blue on a new layer set to 40 or 50% transparent, then high-lights in very pale yellow or white on a third layer. Glad you like it!! :D

Thanks - It took hours cos I am new to GIMP and it's not easy to hit the right conbination of color, transparency, brush size, mode, etc.. It was a good learning experience tho - faster next time I hope :D

I like this, nice color scheme & effective shading.. I also think the background goes with it really well..... I have never used gimp ^^ I understand its a good program..

Yes it is very good in what it can do, but it is a difficult program to work with as it has SO many options it's hard to know what you are doing - the number of times I drew on the wrong layer, or with the wrong brush, or the wrong size, or wrong hardness, wrong transparency, wrong mode,.... arrrrgh!! :frustrated::steaming: But I finally got to where I wanted it :D

The background is one of the special effects, Super Nova, that you can get with a few clicks - recolored and faded. The other drawbacks with GIMP is that it is a huge program, so you really need a fast computer and a big hard drive (which I don't have)

Thanks for the compliment

hm ^^ yeah I know what you mean about the options.. at least with photoshop there is a manual.. (which I never use  ) i tried to download gimp before, but it would not work on my computer :{{ Ive heard its a good program though ^^ i also know how frustrating it is to try all the different things! i hate that with photoshop!!! its so funny though, there i will be trying to do something like add a three letter word to some design, and after fifty tries it isn't right, but with a pencil all you have to do is just WRITE IT HOW YOU WANT IT.. it makes me laugh sometimes how computers can make difficult things so simple.. but, at the same time, simple things so difficult!

I'm trying to do a new piece, and this time GIMP has a lot of options ghosted and unavailable - and I have no idea why! And I just don't get how to move images to alpha Aggggh!! :frustrated: :steaming: And to make life more dificult it's been raining and our roof is leaking so now I have a wet patch in my bed :( And the wife blamed me!!

Oh well :P

oh no! both of those things are terrible! :( i dont know what the weather is like there but here where I live, it is going into rainy season, and that means it will pretty much rain buckets for the next 5 months.. i would NOT want to have a leak right now.. near your BED!! :X i hope you can get it fixed.. ! :tears: and.. how can it be YOUR fault the roof is leaking/? maybe you were just kidding about that. // either way I hope it can be fixed asap..... :tears:

about gimp, i dont know what to say.. photoshop does those things and I want to throw things at the wall.. i just have to close it down and leave it.. often when i come back its all changed again and I stil have no idea why..... let me know what happens with your ceiling, ok???

My wife brought me a cup of tea to wake me up earlier, so she assumed I had fallen asleep with it in my hand and spilt it! :sleepy: The house is rented, so the landlord will get it sorted - I hope.

We are lucky - up north there was 12 inches of rain in one day, 19th November 2009, the most rain in the UK on record!!! About 20 bridges colapsed or declared unsafe and condemmed, 1,800 bridges need urgent inspection, whole farms washed away, and others left under tons of gravel and rocks, at least 5 deaths, and water up to 4 feet deep in thousands of homes and businesses. Worst hit was Cockermouth - [link]

I will keep trying with GIMP, cos I can't aford PS :)

It's art that keeps me sane :D
